Zhang Tanyao (?–494)
Zhang Tanyao lived during the Liu Song and Southern Qi dynasties of the Southern Dynasties period.
According to records in Comprehensive Mirror of Perfected Immortals and Practitioners of the Dao (Volume 33), he once resided at Zhaoxian Guan (Zhaoxian Temple) on Mount Heng. Through intense meditation and spiritual concentration, he achieved a mystical connection with the Heavenly Perfected Ones, who secretly imparted to him the Taoist methods of "nourishing the primordial harmony within the body" and "silently paying homage to the Great Emperor" (a core Taoist ritual of inner devotion to celestial deities).

After practicing these methods for thirteen years, he gained the ability to perform inexplicable transformations (a sign of advanced Taoist cultivation).
He passed away in the first year of the Yanxing era of the Southern Qi Dynasty (494).
In the first year of the Chonghe era of Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty (1118), he was posthumously awarded the title "Perfected One of Preserving Radiance and Inheriting Illumination."
