The Zhang Tongxuan 张通玄

The Zhang Tongxuan 张通玄

Paul Peng
Zhang Tongxuan, the 11th Heavenly Master of the Zhengyi School (a major school of Taoism), styled himself Zhongda. He was the eldest son of Zhang Zixiang.
He was a man of few words and devoted himself to quiet practice of Taoist talismans and the Daoist magical arts. When a plague was prevalent at that time, Zhongda placed a talisman in the water. All those who drew and drank the purified water did not contract the plague, and those who had already fallen ill were also cured. As a result, people seeking talismans flocked to the gate of his Taoist temple.

He passed away at the age of 97. In the 13th year of the Zhizheng era of Emperor Shun of the Yuan Dynasty (1353), he was posthumously conferred the title of "Shangqing Xuanying Chonghe True Lord".
