The Zhang Yu 张钰

Zhang Yu was the 59th Heavenly Master of the Zhengyi (Orthodox Unity) School of Taoism.

His courtesy name was Peixiang, and his literary name was Zhuoting. He was the second son of the 58th Heavenly Master (Zhang Qilong).

As recorded in Bu Tianshi Shijia (Supplement to the Genealogy of the Heavenly Masters) by Zhang Yuanxu: From childhood, his voice was as resonant as a large bell, and he had a dignified and composed demeanor. He enjoyed reading and was skilled in speech.

Throughout his life, in his intentions and interactions with others, he was sincere and genuine, without pretense. He respected his teachers and valued his friends, so people were happy to associate with him. In the 5th year of the Jiaqing reign (1800), he inherited the title of Heavenly Master. Whenever he was required to go to the imperial capital for an audience with the emperor in accordance with established conventions, he always received the emperor’s favor and kindness.

He possessed Taoist magical arts—his prayers for rain and snow were all efficacious.

In the 30th year of the Guangxu reign of Emperor Dezong (1904), he was granted the title of "Guanglu Dafu" (Grand Master of Glorious Happiness) by imperial edict.
