Zhang Yuanhan was a native of Anyin in Fanyi (now part of Jiangxi Province) during the Song and Yuan dynasties. His courtesy name was Yanke. From a young age, he admired the teachings of Laozi and Zhuangzi; when he grew up, he studied under Hu Keshan of Chongxu Mountain.

In the early Yuan Dynasty, it was stipulated that Taoism should take the lineage of the Celestial Master Zhang from Longhu Mountain as the Zhengyi Sect, which was in charge of Taoist affairs.
For Taoist temples in other prefectures and counties, those Taoist disciples who were astute and adaptable to the times could be registered at government offices. Through this process, Zhang Yuanhan was assigned to Yuanzhou first, then registered in Taiping Prefecture, and later promoted to Daolu (an official position in charge of local Taoist affairs).

Zhang Yuanhan liked to use his money to renovate temples and take care of flowers, trees, fruits and vegetables for his own enjoyment. However, when talking with others, he was fond of pointing out others' mistakes directly to their faces. Some people could hardly bear this, yet they attributed it to his straightforward nature.

He passed away in the fourth year of the Zhida reign (1311) at the age of 61.
