Zhang Yunian was a native of Guixi, Jiangxi Province, during the reign of Emperor Ningzong of the Southern Song Dynasty. He was the great-grandson of Zhang Tianlin.

Zhang Tianlin was the biological father of the 35th Heavenly Master (a title in Taoism, referring to the leader of the Zhengyi Sect centered on Longhu Mountain).
Zhang Yunian became a Taoist priest at Shangqing Palace and resided at Yangsu Guan (Yangsu Taoist Temple).
