The Zhang Zhenren 张真人

The Zhang Zhenren 张真人

Paul Peng
Zhang Zhenren (?-1840) was a native of Tongzhou, Shuntian Prefecture during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Jiaozhi, his art name was Huishengzi, and his alternative art name was Kunhe.

His parents passed away early; at the age of twenty-three, he converted to Daoism under Master Duan of Wenchang Pavilion, practicing Daoism with unremitting diligence. After eight years of ascetic practice, his Daoist attainments advanced greatly.

Subsequently, he traveled abroad to seek teachings, traversing numerous dangers and obstacles.

When he studied at Baiyun Guan (White Cloud Temple) in the capital, he strengthened his resolve internally and devoted himself to practice externally, thus obtaining the esoteric teachings of the Three Emperors Jade Instructions and redoubling his diligence.

In the twelfth year of the Jiaqing reign (1807), Elder Master Zhang, a Taoist master from Huashan, established a precept ordination hall at Baiyun Guan and transmitted the Supreme Grand Law to Master Zhang Hehao. Seeing Jiaozhi’s noble bearing, he also passed on the mantle to him.

He once resided in an underground cellar to cultivate stillness for over a year, cutting off contact with worldly affairs. Having stayed at the temple for more than a decade, he renovated the corridors, verandas, halls, and pavilions, restoring them to a new condition.

He held ten altar ceremonies successively, ordaining more than 1,100 disciples with precepts.

In the fifteenth year of the Daoguang reign (1835), he transmitted the Dharma to Lü Hazhen, the abbot of Xuanmiao Guan (Mysterious and Wonderful Temple) in Nanyang.

He passed away of illness in the second month of the twentieth year of the Daoguang reign (1840) and was buried in the Pagoda Courtyard of Baiyun Guan. He was the seventeenth-generation Precept Transmission Master.
