Zhang Zhipu (1204–1277)

Zhang Zhipu lived during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. According to The Comprehensive Gazetteer of the Great Qing Dynasty: In his youth, Zhang Zhipu became a Taoist monk by studying under Zhao Zhiyu of Jiting.
He practiced "lianxing" (Taoist physical cultivation) and asceticism, and begged for alms between the Fen and Jin regions (covering parts of present-day Shanxi Province).

The local villagers, taking pity on his diligence and hardships, built a Taoist temple for him to reside in. The revered Taoist master "Qinghe Zhenren" (Real Person Qinghe) named this temple "Chunyang Guan" (Chunyang Taoist Temple).

In the fifth year of the Yuan Dingzong era (1250), Li Zhenchang, the Grand Patriarch in charge of Taoism ("Xuanmen Zhangjiao Dazongshi"), issued an order in accordance with imperial authority to rename the temple "Dongshen Gong" (Dongshen Taoist Palace). Meanwhile, Zhang Zhipu was bestowed the title "Chunde Dashi" (Master of Pure Virtue).

Zhang Zhipu passed away in the fourteenth year of the Yuan Zhiyuan era (1277) at the age of 73. Among his disciples, the most famous one was Wang Zhining, who held the literary name "Anzhenzi" (Master of Peaceful Truth).
