Zhang Zhiwei, also known later as Zhang Zhichun and styled Tiannizi, was a native of Bushan Fushang (an ancient place name, exact location to be verified) during the late Jin to early Yuan Dynasty.

According to Gazetteer of Shandong (Shandong Tongzhi), Zhiwei could recite the Five Classics (a collection of core Confucian classics) at the age of six, earning him the title "child prodigy" among the people. At twelve, he bid farewell to his parents, retreated to the mountains to study Taoism, and became a disciple of Master Cuidaoyan, who was honored with the title "Mr. Zhenjing" (True Tranquility). He was given the religious name "Zhiwei" in accordance with Taoist tradition.

After several years of practice, he attained mastery of Taoism and became renowned across the Qilu region (ancient name for the area covering present-day Shandong Province). Yan Wuhui, Duke of Dongping, appointed Fan Puzhao from Ninghai to serve as the abbot of Wanshou Shangqing Palace; meanwhile, he recommended Zhiwei to assist in managing the palace’s affairs. Shortly after taking office, Zhiwei revitalized the abandoned matters of the palace, completed what was lacking, encouraged the lazy to become diligent, and urged the disrespectful to show reverence. By ensuring that all necessary arrangements were in place, he gained fame among the Taoist community for his strict integrity and competence in administration.

The imperial court granted him the name "Zhichun" (changing his original name "Zhiwei" to "Zhichun") and bestowed the honorific title "Great Master of Venerating Truth and Protecting Virtue". He was also awarded a purple robe (a symbol of high status in Taoist circles) and appointed as Tidian (supervisor) of Huizhen Palace on Mount Tai. Later, he returned to Bushan and lived in seclusion in his former residence. In July, at Duke Yan Wuhui’s request, he oversaw the construction and renovation of Yunu Shrine (Maiden Shrine) in Tai’an, Tianmen (Heavenly Gate), Huizhen Palace, Yudi Hall (Hall of the Jade Emperor), Shengzu Hall (Hall of the Sacred Ancestor), the abbot’s corridor, and ritual kitchens. Additionally, he expanded and renovated Daiyue Guan (Temple of Mount Dai) and Chaoyuan Guan (Temple of Worshiping the Primordial).

In recognition of his meritorious contributions, he was further honored with the title "Great Master of Venerating Truth, Illuminating Dao, and Achieving Harmony". Concurrently, he was appointed to supervise Taoist affairs in Tai’an Prefecture. In the fourth year of the Zhongtong era (1263), the "True Person Chengming"—the leader of Da Changchun Palace in Yandu (present-day Beijing)—sent a special envoy to deliver the imperial edict, appointing Zhang Zhichun as Tiju (administrator) to oversee the renovation and decoration of Dongyue Temple (Temple of the Eastern Sacred Mountain).

After the successful completion of this task, he was officially conferred the title "Great Master of Transcending Vacuity, Attaining Virtue, and Penetrating Mystery" and concurrently held the position of Chief Tidian of Taoism in Dongping Circuit.
