Zhang Zhixuan was a native of Mengmen County in Hedong (now part of Shanxi Province) during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. His courtesy name was Yinwei, and his literary name was Jiranzi.

As recorded in The Stele of the Newly Built Yongchang Taoist Temple in Shengzhou, Zhang Zhixuan began studying Taoism in his childhood. When he grew up, he thoroughly and proficiently researched the Taoist talismanic doctrines of the Zhengyi School. During the Zhenyou era (1213–1217) of the Jin Dynasty, he fled south to avoid the chaos of war.

Later, when he heard that Qiu Chuji (a renowned Taoist master) had accepted the imperial invitation and taken up residence at Baiyun Guan (White Cloud Taoist Temple) in Yanjing (the capital of the Jin Dynasty, now Beijing), he sighed and said, "The Dao of Heaven lies in the north. I shall travel far to the Yunshuo region (a historical area covering parts of present-day Shanxi and Inner Mongolia) to uphold and promote the principles of Taoism."

Subsequently, he arrived at Qingle Township in Yongxing. Enchanted by the serene beauty of the mountains and rivers there, he built a thatched hut and settled down. As a result, his influence spread throughout the local area, and the incense offerings at his residence (a sign of people’s devotion) became extremely prosperous. He then constructed Yingxian Guan (Welcoming Immortals Taoist Temple) in the mountains.

Zhang Zhixuan imparted the "Spiritual Chapters of the Shangqing Three Grottoes" and the talismans of the Quanzhen School. He took the lead in promoting Taoism in Wuding (a historical region) for more than 20 years and enlightened and guided a large number of disciples.
