Zhang Zhizhen (?–1252)

Zhang Zhizhen was a native of Yuyang (now part of Beijing) during the Jin and Yuan dynasties, and he held the literary name "Tongxuanzi" (Master of Penetrating the Mysterious).

According to the Stele of Tongxian Wanshou Palace: From childhood, Zhang Zhizhen admired Taoism; later, he studied under Zhang Wuzhen and became a Taoist monk.

In the 10th year of the Yuan Taizong era (1238), he went to pay homage to the ancestral temple of Taoism and offer incense there. After that, he traveled to Xiqianhu Village near the ancestral temple, built a Taoist temple there, and resided in it.

In the 13th year (1241), the Great Patriarch Qinghe (a top leader of the Quanzhen School of Taoism) granted the temple a plaque inscribed with "Tongxian Guan" (Tongxian Taoist Temple). Zhang Zhizhen was actually a descendant of Patriarch Qinghe’s Taoist lineage.

In the 4th year of the Yuan Dingzong era (1249), he expanded the original temple and renamed it "Tongxian Wanshou Gong" (Tongxian Longevity Palace).

He passed away from illness in the 2nd year of the Yuan Xianzong era (1252).
