Zhang Zhong was a native of Linchuan (now part of Jiangxi Province) during the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties.

His courtesy name was Jinghua, and his literary names were Tieguanzi (Master of the Iron Crown) and Tieguan Daoist (Taoist of the Iron Crown).

According to the "Biography of Zhang Zhong" in The History of the Ming Dynasty: In his youth, he took the imperial examination for the title of Jinshi (a successful candidate in the highest imperial examination) but failed. Thus, he indulged himself in traveling among mountains and rivers.

He once met an extraordinary person who taught him the study of divination and numerology. Later, he became a Taoist priest and liked to wear an iron crown—hence his literary name "Tieguanzi". Emperor Taizu of the Ming Dynasty summoned him to the court many times, and all his words and predictions proved accurate.

Records of his deeds can also be found in Jiangning Fu Zhi (Gazetteer of Jiangning Prefecture) and Jiangxi Tongzhi (Comprehensive Gazetteer of Jiangxi).
