The Zhang Zhong 张忠

The Zhang Zhong 张忠

Paul Peng
Zhang Zhong, styled Juhe, was a native of Zhongshan (present-day Dingxian County, Hebei) during the Jin Dynasty. To avoid the Yongjia Rebellion, he went into seclusion on Mount Tai.
The Book of Jin·Biography of Zhang Zhong states that he was tranquil and had few desires, adhering to the principles of emptiness and inaction. Residing in the mountains, he practiced techniques of qi absorption, grain abstinence, and consuming ganoderma and minerals.
He did not read classical texts, and when teaching others, he only took "the ultimate Dao of emptiness and inaction" as the core. Fu Jian of the Former Qin heard of his reputation, summoned him to Chang'an, and treated him as a teacher.
When Zhang Zhong returned (to Mount Tai), Fu Jian bestowed upon him clothing and hats, allowing him to keep his accustomed attire unchanged. He passed away on the journey back, and was posthumously titled "Mr. Andao".
