The Zhao Baoyi 赵抱一

The Zhao Baoyi 赵抱一

Paul Peng
Zhao Baoyi was a native of Liangdang in Fengzhou (now part of Shaanxi Province) during the reigns of Emperors Zhenzong and Renzong of the Northern Song Dynasty. His family had made a living by farming and sericulture for generations.
At the age of twelve, while herding cattle in the fields, he encountered an extraordinary person, who taught him medical skills as well as the methods of Taoist talismans and divination. The medicines he prescribed could cure illnesses as soon as they were administered, and his fame spread far and wide in the imperial capital.

Emperor Zhenzong heard of him, and in the fourth year of the Dazhong Xiangfu period (1011), Zhao was summoned to the imperial capital. A Taoist temple named Jianji Guan was built for him to reside in; before long, he was transferred to Dongtaiyi Palace, formally ordained as a Taoist priest, and granted the name "Baoyi" by the emperor.
After a long time, Zhao requested to return to his hometown. The emperor gave him generous gifts and had another Taoist temple, Zhenji Guan, constructed for him to live in.
Later, during the reigns of Emperors Yingzong and Huizong, he continued to receive imperial favors. He passed away at the age of seventy-eight.
