Zhao Baoyuan (1135–1206)

Zhao Baoyuan was a native of Jichuan in Yan'an during the Jin Dynasty. His Taoist title was "Huanyuanzi" (Master of Returning to the Origin), and he was commonly known among the people as "Mo Ge" (Brother Mo).

His family had been engaged in farming for generations. From a young age, Zhao Baoyuan aspired to live a life beyond the mundane world (pursuing the Taoist path). He met a Taoist priest who imparted esoteric teachings to him, after which he built a hermitage and resided there.
Later, through Zhenren Liu Changsheng (Perfected One Liu Changsheng), he received the "Xinyin" (Mind Seal—a profound Taoist transmission representing the inheritance of core doctrines and spiritual enlightenment). He then lived in seclusion in Yangshan for twelve years.

Subsequently, he went to the Ancestral Court of Zhongnan Mountain (a major center of the Quanzhen School of Taoism), where he studied under and served Wang Chongyang. He gained great enlightenment and verification in terms of profound Taoist principles and esoteric methods. Later, he traveled to famous mountains, and his mastery of Taoist practices advanced significantly; he claimed to be a disciple of the Supreme Lord Lao (the deified founder of Taoism).

In his later years, he returned to his hometown and resided at Yingxiang Guan (Yingxiang Taoist Temple). In the 5th year of the Taihe era (1205), fellow Taoists from Ganquan County earnestly invited him to live in their hermitage. He passed away due to illness in the second month of the 6th year of the Taihe era (1206), at the age of 72.

His works compiled during his lifetime were collected into Huncheng Pian (The Chapter of Primordial Unity), which has been passed down to later generations.
