Zhao Huizong was a native of Yidu in Xi Prefecture (now part of Henan Province) during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty.
As recorded in Volume 41 of Comprehensive Mirror of True Immortals Who Embodied the Dao Through the Ages: He received the transmission of the "Immortal Tallies of the Nine Heavens" and the "Esoteric Methods of the Three Grottoes" (core Taoist ritual tokens and secret practices).
Later, he resided on Guo Dao Mountain. During the Tianbao era of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, he returned to Xi Prefecture and passed away there.
