Zhao Su, with the courtesy name Caiqing, was a native of Hezhong (present-day Yongji, Shanxi Province) during the late Jin and early Yuan dynasties. He was granted the title "Xubai" (meaning "Void and Purity") and was a Taoist monk of the Quanzhen Sect.

As recorded in "Inscription of Huangji Taoist Abbey" from Yishan Collection: "He dedicated himself to Confucianism as his lifelong pursuit. His academic foundation originated from The Analects of Confucius and Mencius, and gradually extended to the Yiluo School (a Confucian school established by Cheng Hao, Cheng Yi and their followers). He was even preparing to explore the classics of the Three Sages (referring to Confucian sages such as Confucius and Mencius) to gain further insights."

Zhao Su (known by his title "Xubai") was proficient in the arts of zhanhou (observing celestial phenomena to predict events), medicine, and divination, and his skills were quite effective and accurate.
