The Zheng Delin 郑德邻

Zheng Delin (1261-1323) was a native of Linhai, Taizhou during the late Song to Yuan Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Junrui. When he reached adulthood, he dedicated himself exclusively to the practice of lianxing baozhen (tempering the physical form and preserving one’s true essence) and thus entered the Taoist school. He was appointed as Daozheng (administrator of Taoist affairs) of Huangyan County and later as Daopan (judicial supervisor of Taoist affairs) of Qingyuan Prefecture.

After holding these positions for a long time, he sighed and said, "The reason one becomes a Taoist is to safeguard the innate, natural authenticity of oneself. If I am burdened with administrative duties, I will lose far too much of that true self."

As a result, he gave up his identity as an official Taoist and built a tomb for himself at the foot of Guiren Peak in Huangshan Mountain.

Living in the mountains, he spent his days reading Confucian classics and the works of Laozi and Zhuangzi (core texts of Taoism).

He passed away due to illness in the third year of the Zhizhi era (1323) at the age of 63.
