The Zhou Guiqian 周贵谦

The Zhou Guiqian 周贵谦

Paul Peng
Zhou Guiqian was a native of Si'an Town, Changxing Prefecture (now part of Zhejiang Province) during the Song and Yuan dynasties.

He made a living by farming but aspired to become an immortal. Thus, he and his younger brothers Zhou Jinyuan and Zhou Shanxin donated all their family property to build a Taoist temple, where they worshipped the True Martial Deity (Zhenwu) and the deity's parents. He himself abstained from the five flavors (sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, salty) and lived on wild herbs and plants at night, dwelling in the mountains and forests. The number of his disciples grew day by day.
When the Celestial Master of the Successor Han (a lineage of Taoist leaders) heard of this, he praised Zhou Guiqian, inscribed the temple's name as "Sanzhen Guan" (Temple of the Three True Ones), and conferred on Zhou the title of "Taoist Master of Penetrating Truth, Gaining Enlightenment, and Upholding the Dao".
