Zhou Lüjing was a native of Jiaxing (now part of Zhejiang Province) during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644).

His courtesy name was Yizhi, and he styled himself "Daoren Meidian" (the "Taoist of Plum Blossom Summit").

He was well-versed in the Taoist vital energy (qi) cultivation techniques. He compiled Chifeng Sui (The Marrow of the Scarlet Phoenix), a work that systematically collected and categorized the body-stretching exercises imitating the movements of immortals (such as "bear walking" and "bird spreading its wings"—classic Taoist daoyin practices for regulating qi and maintaining health), forming a cohesive and original theoretical system of his own.
