Zhou Shiqing was a native of Pucheng, Jianzhou (now part of Fujian Province) during the Song Dynasty.
In the 1st year of the Yuanyou era of Emperor Zhezong (1086), he traveled to the imperial capital to take the imperial examination. On his journey, he met a Daoist who enlightened him. As a result, he abandoned his pursuit of an official career and went to Guoshan Mountain to practice Daoism.

He was proficient in the Daoist arts of qifu (absorbing cosmic vital energy) and buqi (emitting vital energy). He could release external vital energy to treat people’s illnesses, and his treatments proved quite effective.
