Zhou Shiqing was a native of Pucheng, Jianzhou (now part of Fujian Province) during the Song Dynasty.

In the first year of the Yuanyou era of Emperor Zhezong (1086), he traveled to the imperial capital to take the imperial examination. On the way, he encountered a Daoist who enlightened him. Thus, he abandoned his pursuit of an official career and went to Guoshan Mountain to practice Daoism.

He was skilled in the Daoist arts of "qifu" (absorbing vital energy) and "buqi" (emitting vital energy). He could emit external vital energy to treat people's illnesses, and his treatments were quite effective.
