Zhou Xia was a native of Fujian during the early Southern Song Dynasty, and his courtesy name was Shiqing.

He and his wife entered the Taoist order together, then lived in seclusion on Youguo Mountain to practice the refinement of the "Great Elixir" (a core concept in Taoist alchemy, referring to the supreme elixir believed to grant immortality or spiritual perfection).
One day, a violent storm broke out, and the Golden Elixir went missing. Zhou Xia and his wife burned themselves to death.

The imperial court issued an edict conferring on them the title "Chongying Zhenren" (Immortal of Thorough Response).
