Zhou Xuanzhen, also known by his courtesy name Xuanchu, was a native of Gusu (present-day Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province) during the Yuan and Ming dynasties.

His family originally lived in Jiahe, and later moved to Gusu, where he became a registered resident. At the age of fourteen, he entered Zixu Temple in Jiahe and became a Taoist priest under Li Gongrui.

He received the transmission of the art of summoning and controlling ghosts and spirits. He also studied the Lingbao Great Law under True Person Cao Guisun and Thunder Magic under True Person Bu Zonghao.

In the third year of the Hongwu era (1370), he was summoned to an audience with the emperor, who inquired about matters concerning ghosts and spirits. His responses were to the emperor's satisfaction, and he was granted residence in the Guanglu Temple.

In the fourth year (1371), he was summoned to the capital. In the fifth year (1372), when a severe drought struck, the Prime Minister of the Zhongshu Province ordered Xuanchu to conduct prayers for rain, and his prayers were answered as promptly as before. He first served as the abbot of Danxia Taoist Abbey, and later as the abbot of Zhidao Temple in Changshu, gaining fame for his Taoist deeds in both positions.
