The Zhou Yizhen 周颐真

Paul Peng

Zhou Yizhen was a native of Fuqing (now part of Fujian Province) in the Yuan Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Yangzhi (also recorded as Yangyuan).

He styled himself "Shanleizi" and was commonly known as "Mr. Lanshi" in the world. When he was young, he became a Taoist monk. He met a Taoist hermit from Western Shu, who taught him rare books and the secret methods of "Qian Dun Fan Bi" (a Taoist practice involving concealment and energy circulation).

Later, he studied the Lingbao Doctrine under Cai Shu at Kaiyuan Guan (Kaiyuan Taoist Temple).

His Taoist attainments advanced steadily, and his Taoist skills became prominent.

In the second year of Yuantong (1334), there was a severe drought in the prefecture and counties. Zhou Yizhen held a prayer ceremony, and thunderstorms arrived immediately.

He authored Collected Works of Dongfu Laoren (Laoren meaning "Elder" or "Virtuous Man").
