Zhu Benzhong was a native of She County, Anhui Province during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty. His courtesy name was Tailai, and his literary name was Ningyangzi.

He authored Xiu Yang Xu Zhi (Essentials of Cultivation) and Yin Shi Xu Zhi (Essentials of Diet), which have been passed down to later generations.

These books mainly introduce qigong practices for health preservation (qigong is a traditional Chinese system of physical and mental cultivation that combines breathing exercises, body movements, and meditation to regulate the body’s "qi"—vital energy).
