The Zhu Zhixi 朱志希

The Zhu Zhixi 朱志希

Paul Peng
Zhu Zhixi (1169-1254) was a native of Shanzhou (now part of Shandong Province) during the Jin and Yuan dynasties.

His courtesy name was Ziyi, and he was known as "Great Master of Penetrating the Subtle" in his time.

From childhood, he had a devotion to Taoism. When he was over twenty years old, he renounced secular life to become a Taoist monk and took Taoist Master Qingping as his initiator.

In the fifth year of the Zhenyou era (1217), he arrived at the East Gate of Jinzhou, where he met "True Person Changchun" (Qiu Chuji, a founding master of the Quanzhen Sect). He then requested to receive Taoist teachings; the True Person gave him a verse, saying: "Do not ask how celestial secrets unfold—only cultivate hidden virtues and hold fast to this thought always. Life’s cycles all align with the Dao of immortals; practice diligently each day with all your strength."

From this point on, Zhu Zhixi gained profound insight into the Dao, and his progress in Taoist cultivation advanced significantly. In the fourth year of the Zhengda era (1227), he built Wuyue Guan (Temple of the Five Great Mountains) and had statues of the "Seven True Sages of Taoism" sculpted there. He also initiated dozens of Taoist monks and nuns into the faith.

In the ninth year of the Yuan Taizong era (1237), he built another Wuyue Miao (Shrine of the Five Great Mountains) and had statues of the Five Great Mountains’ sacred deities crafted. At the same time, he constructed Tongwei Guan (Temple of Penetrating the Subtle) and Xuanjin An (Pavilion of Mysterious Gold), and initiated several hundred more Taoist monks and nuns in total.

He passed away due to illness in the fourth year of the Yuan Xianzong era (1254) at the age of 85.
