Zou Tiebi was a native of Nanfeng (now part of Jiangxi Province) in the early Southern Song Dynasty.
He was also known as Zou Tiebi (with "Tiebi" literally meaning "Iron Brush," a style name possibly referencing his expertise in Taoist talismans) and was a great master of the Thunder Method (Leifa, a core Taoist ritual practice for invoking thunder and governing natural forces). He styled himself Yunshuiqing (literally "Clouds, Water, and Purity," reflecting a Taoist aesthetic of simplicity and harmony with nature).

He first studied under True Person Shangguan, the nephew of Wang Wenqing. Later, he met Wang Wenqing himself and received personal instruction in esoteric Taoist essentials from him. As his Taoist attainments grew increasingly prominent over time, he later founded Miaoling Taoist Temple to enshrine and worship Wang Wenqing.
