The author is unknown. Judging from its content and wording, the text was presumably compiled between the Song Dynasty and the The Tang Dynasty.

TongZhi·YiWen Lue (General Records·Survey of Literature) records "Three Divisions of Talisman Scripts in Four Scrolls", which is suspected to be this very text.

The existing version in The Daozang consists of three scrolls, and is included in the Talisman category of the The Dongshen Section.

This text compiles more than 740 various divine talismans, including those for subduing strange apparitions, warding off ghosts, calming the soul, protecting the body, pacifying dwellings, warding off plagues, dispelling noxious earthly qi, stopping financial losses, and blessing farmland and sericulture—among which talismans for subduing strange apparitions are the most numerous. The methods of using these talismans are generally to write the talismans and place them where ghosts and strange beings linger, or set them on doors, windows, beds and other furnishings, or wear them on the body or swallow them. Most of the divine talismans recorded in the text date from before the Song Dynasty.
