Tianzhu Guan Sect 天柱观派

Tianzhu Guan Sect 天柱观派

Paul Peng
Tianzhu Guan Sect, a branch of the Longmen Sect of Quanzhen Taoism.
It was founded by Elder Jinzhu, the 8th generation of the Longmen Sect, with Tianzhu Guan (Tianzhu Temple) in Jinzhu Ping, Yuhang, Zhejiang as its preaching center. Biography of Elder Jinzhu in Volume 2 of The Lamp of the Golden Cover states: "Elder Jinzhu had three different courtesy names and Taoist titles recorded in three sources: Records of Notable Persons in Dongxiao mentions Sheng Qingya, a native of Tongcheng, Jiangnan (region south of the Yangtze River), who was a successful candidate in the imperial examination at the end of the Ming Dynasty and lived in seclusion at Tianzhu Guan; Yang's Collection of Unofficial Stories records Qiaoyunshi, a native of Tongxiang with the surname Sheng, whose given name is unknown.

He passed the imperial examination in the late Ming Dynasty. When the world was in turmoil (referring to the transition from the Ming to the Qing Dynasty), he retired to Dadi (a scenic area in Zhejiang) in seclusion and styled himself Tuimi Shanren (Hermit of Hidden Secrets). Supplementary Records of Gucheng notes that the extraordinary person Jin Dadi was extremely learned (literally 'his learning could fill five carriages') and once compared himself to Guan Zhong and Yue Yi (famous statesmen and strategists in ancient China). After the fall of the Ming Dynasty, he lived in seclusion. Initially, he stayed at Baiyun Ju (White Cloud Residence) in 金盖 (Golden Cover), and later changed his Taoist title to Qiaoyun. Eventually, he retired to Jinzhu Ping of Tianzhu... He had many works, which were printed and circulated by Shi'an and others."

He was presumably a reclusive scholar in the early Qing Dynasty. He once received precepts from Wang Changyue and became the 8th-generation disciple of the Longmen Sect. In the 3rd year of the Kangxi reign (1664), he passed on the teachings to Pan Taimu (courtesy name Muxin), the 9th generation of the Longmen Sect. Pan passed them on to Wang Qingxu (Taoist title Dongyang), the 10th generation, who in turn passed them on to Pan Yiyuan (courtesy name Tianya), the 11th generation. The inheritance after that is unknown.
