What is Actual Practicein Taoism?

In the doctrines of Quanzhen Dao, the inner alchemy cultivation and the work of illuminating the mind and seeing the nature for Dao learners are called “True Merit”.

The religious and social practice of fulfilling morality, doing good deeds, and saving the world is called “True Conduct”, also known as “Genuine Practice”.

What is Actual Practicein Taoism?
It is a consistent feature of Taoism that emphasizing True Merit and Genuine Practice is the foundation of verifying The Dao and attaining immortality.

The so-called “Genuine Practice” by Quanzhen masters generally takes as its tenets: eliminating anger and enduring humiliation, removing emotions and desires, enduring hardship to benefit others, and advocating loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, and righteousness to save the world.

Sayings of Immortal Jin states:

“If you want Genuine Practice, you must cultivate benevolence and accumulate virtue,

relieve the poor and rescue the suffering,

and always hold a heart of salvation when seeing others in distress.

Or guide and inspire good people to enter the Dao and cultivate.

In all you do, put others before yourself,

and be selfless toward all things — this is Genuine Practice.”

Ji Zhizhen, in Yunshan Collection, also chants a poem on “Genuine Practice”:

“Put others first, yourself last, humble and humble;

always keep your station and remain pure and incorruptible.

Benefiting beings and dealing with others, benevolence is not lost;

accord with truth, understand the real, and righteousness is also included.

Do not be deluded, coquettish, or evil to shock the world;

do not give sophistry to deceive the common people.

If you can deeply accumulate your fundamental conduct and virtue,

the upward mechanism need not be sought.”
