What is Great Harmony in Taoism?

Tai means supreme and ultimate; He means harmony.

Taihe refers to the state of ultimate unity and harmony.

Book of Changes • Commentary on the Hexagram Qian states:

“Preserving and maintaining the Taiji supreme harmony brings beneficial steadfastness.”

What is Great Harmony in Taoism?

Wang Fuzhi held:

“Taihe is the ultimate of harmony.”

“Before the existence of forms and objects, there was originally nothing unharmonious;

after forms and objects came into being, this harmony was not lost, hence it is called Taihe.”

(Commentary on Master Zhang's Zheng Meng • Chapter of Supreme Harmony)

It also refers to the harmonious and balanced Qi formed by the union of Yin and Yang.

Zhu Xi, Original Meaning of the Zhouyi, Volume 1:

Taihe is “the harmonious and balanced Qi from the union of Yin and Yang.”

Taihe also denotes the name of a deity in meditation practice.

Supreme Lord Lao Middle Scripture, Volume 1:

“Taihe is the celestial soul, the sovereign of the natural.

It always serves the Lord of the Dao, on the right side.”

It is one of the body deities within the human form.
