What is the Six Ones in Taoism? 什么是六一

Paul Peng

What is the Six Ones in Taoism?

It means that there are six distinct paths, yet they are united by the single Dao.

The expression comes from Laozi’s Dao De Jing:

“Heaven attained the One and became clear;

Earth attained the One and became stable;

What is the Six Ones in Taoism?
Spirits attained the One and became divine;

Valleys attained the One and became full;

All things attained the One and came to life;

Rulers attained the One and became upright under heaven.

All reach their perfection through the The Dao.”

It holds that the clarity of Heaven, stability of Earth, divinity of Spirits, fullness of Valleys, life of all beings, and righteousness of rulers are all different, yet they are united throughout by one single reality — none other than the ultimate Taoism.
