What is the Tian Ren Ganying in Taoism?

A theory concerning the relationship between Heaven and humanity in ancient Chinese philosophy.

Its basic idea is:

Heaven and humanity form one unity; Heaven can intervene in human affairs, and human conduct can also resonate with and influence Heaven.

Natural disasters and anomalies represent Heaven’s punishment, while auspicious omens signify Heaven’s reward for humans.

What is the Tian Ren Ganying in Taoism?
The representative of this theory is Dong Zhongshu, a Confucian scholar of the Han Dynasty.

He regarded Heaven as the ruler of all gods, possessing will and purpose.

Heaven corresponds to humanity and has emotions of joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure; the four seasons—spring, summer, autumn, winter—embody Heaven’s emotions.

According to the principle that “human beings correspond to the number of Heaven”, Heaven created humans solely to fulfill its will.

Human beings are merely a microcosm of Heaven.

The human body, spirit, thoughts, emotions, and moral qualities are all replicas of Heaven and correspond to it.

Luxuriant Gems of the Spring and Autumn Annals · Heaven is that which makes humans human states:

“Human beings owe their existence to Heaven, and Heaven is the great‑grandfather of humanity.”

When all human affairs accord with Heaven, it is called the “Unity of Heaven and Humanity”.

Between Heaven and humanity, not only do their wills communicate, but they can also interact and respond to each other.

When a king is about to rise, Heaven sends auspicious omens;

when a dynasty is to fall, Heaven sends inauspicious portents.

The interaction between Heaven and humanity is awe‑inspiring.

Humans should act in accordance with the Way of Heaven.

People’s good intentions and virtuous deeds can also move Heaven, which then directly sends down auspicious signs as rewards.

The theory of Interaction Between Heaven and Humanity deeply influenced Taoism,

providing a theoretical foundation for Taoist rituals such as worshipping Heaven and praying for rain.

Rituals like praying for rain aim to move Heaven through human conduct so that it alters its original arrangement.

Interaction Between Heaven and Humanity has become a universal principle running through various Taoist scriptures and arts.

However, the principle of Interaction Between Heaven and Humanity in Daoist and Taoist culture differs from the Confucian ethical theory.

The Han Confucian theory was based on an isomorphism between Heaven and humanity in religious will,

while the Daoist and Taoist version emphasizes an isomorphism in the essence of The Dao.

It holds that the universe and humanity are essentially unified in the all‑encompassing Dao, with Qi flowing and communicating between them.

This idea is particularly prominent in Internal Alchemy.
