Compiled by Xu Lingfu, a Taoist priest of the Tang Dynasty.
It was roughly completed in the tenth year of the Yuanhe reign period of Emperor Xianzong of the Tang Dynasty (816).
Xu Lingfu's Commentary on the Wenzi
Consisting of twelve volumes, it is included in the Yujue (Jade Commentary) category of the Dongshen Section of the Daozang (Daoist Canon).The Tongxuan Zhenjing (The True Scripture of Penetrating Mystery) refers to the Wenzi. During the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, Wenzi was conferred the title of Tongxuan Zhenren (True Person of Penetrating Mystery), and his book was named the Tongxuan Zhenjing. Xu Lingfu’s annotations focus on summarizing the main purport of each chapter and expressing his own opinions.
These annotations can serve as reference materials for studying Taoism in the Tang Dynasty.
