Bai Yuchan (1194—?), original name Ge Changgeng, courtesy name Ruhui, Ziqing, Baisou, sobriquet Haiqiongzi, Hainan Weng, Wuyi Sanren, etc., ancestral home Minqing, Fujian, born in Qiongzhou (now Qiongshan, Hainan), was the fifth of the "Southern Five Patriarchs" of the Taoist Neidan School.


Bai Yuchan was intelligent since childhood, well-read in the Nine Classics, skilled in poetry and prose, and excelled in calligraphy and painting. He was recommended for the children's examination. Later, he became a Taoist priest, apprenticed to Chen Niwan, and followed him wandering around, fully acquiring his Taoist methods.


After Chen Niwan's death, Bai Yuchan traveled to various mountains such as Luofu, Wuyi, and Longhu. Sometimes he had disheveled hair and bare feet, sometimes he wore a blue turban and wild clothes, "sometimes running wildly, sometimes sitting still, sometimes sleeping soundly all day, sometimes standing alone all night, sometimes crying or laughing, behaving like a madman."

Afterward, Bai Yuchan lived in seclusion and devoted himself to spreading the Dao of alchemy, widely accepting disciples, and became the actual founder of the Southern School of Taoist Neidan. He successively took in Yuan Chang, Peng Si, Chen Shoumo, Zhan Jirui, and others as disciples, breaking the history of single transmission of the Southern School from Zhang Boduan to Chen Niwan.


He authored works such as "Yulong Collection," "Shangqing Collection," and "Wuyi Collection." After Bai Yuchan's ascension, he was posthumously conferred as "Ziqing Mingdao Zhenren," and was known as "Mr. Ziqing."
