大道废,有仁义;智慧出,有大伪;六亲不和,有孝慈;国家昏乱,有忠臣
When the Great Dao (Way or Method) ceased tobe observed,benevolence and righteousness came intovogue.(Then) appeared wisdom and shrewdness, andthere ensued great hypocrisy. When harmony no longerprevailed throughout the six kinships,filial sons found theirmanifestation; when the states and clans fell into disorder,loyal ministers appeared.
【译文】至大的自然之道被废弃了,才会产生仁义;机智巧慧出现了，就会产生大的伪诈;亲戚不和睦,才会大力提倡孝慈;国家混乱动荡，才会产生忠臣。
Translation:
When the greatest natural Dao is abandoned, benevolence and righteousness arise. When cunning and cleverness emerge, great deception is born. When relatives are disharmonious, filial piety and kindness are vigorously advocated. When the state is chaotic and turbulent, loyal ministers appear.
