Tao Te Ching Chapter 34

The Original Chinese Text

大道泛兮，其可左右。万物恃之而生而不辞，功成不名有。衣养万物而不为主，可名于小；万物归焉，而不为主，可名为大。以其终不自为大，故能成其大。

All-pervading is the Great Dao! It may be found on theleft hand and on the right.
All things depend on it for their production, which it gives to them, not one refusing obedience to it. When its work is accomplished, it does not claim the name of having done it. It clothes all things as with a garment, and makes no assumption of being their lord; - it may be named in the smallest things. All things return (to their root and disappear), and do not know that it is it which presides overtheir doing so; - it may be named in the greatest things.
Hence the sage is able (in the same way) to accomplish his great achievements. It is through his not making himself great that he can accomplish them.

【译文】大道是普遍存在的，其可左可右而无所不在。大道，万物依赖它而产生发展，它却不推辞，功业成就后却不自以为有功。它养育万物而不自以为主宰，可以称它为小，万物归附而不自以为主宰，可以称它为大。正因为他不自以为伟大，所以才能成就它的伟大。

【Translation】
The Great Path is universally present, existing on both the left and right without exception. The Great Path relies on all things to emerge and develop, yet it does not shirk its responsibilities; after achieving its accomplishments, it does not consider itself meritorious. It nurtures all things without claiming dominion over them, which can be called smallness; when all things submit to it without considering themselves superior, it can be called greatness. Precisely because it does not claim grandeur for itself, it achieves its own greatness.
