Taoist Incantation: Incantation to Summon the Ten Gods of Taiyi

Incantation to Summon the Ten Gods of Taiyi

The divine qi is ethereal and potent,

Its might commands ten thousand stars.

The Heavenly Gate connects to me,

The Five Great Mountains connect to humanity.

On the left stands the Azure Dragon,

On the right stands the White Tiger.

Hasten to summon Taiyi,

May each of the Ten Gods listen.

By name, come in haste!

Explanation:

This incantation is titled "Summoning the Ten Gods," but in essence, it is a prayer to quickly summon the Ten Gods under Taiyi’s jurisdiction. Taiyi originally referred to a divine name associated with the North Star; later, it evolved into a form of shùshù (traditional Chinese metaphysical divination). Practitioners of shùshù regarded Taiyi as the "noble deity of Heaven," holding supreme status at the cosmic center and capable of guiding people toward good fortune and away from misfortune. However, Taiyi circulates through the "Nine Palaces" (a cosmic framework in Taoist cosmology) in an endless cycle—its varying positions thus bring different outcomes of fortune or misfortune.

Under Taiyi’s domain are ten gods (though there is also a theory of sixteen gods), including:

  • Tianfu (Heavenly Blessing),
  • Junji (Lord’s Foundation),
  • Chenji (Minister’s Foundation),
  • Minji (People’s Foundation),
  • Jiuqi (Nine Qis),
  • Dayou (Great Wandering, an inauspicious god),
  • Xiaoyou (Lesser Wandering),
  • Sishen (Four Gods, the primordial qi of water, which can be used to divine floods, droughts, wars, plagues, and famines),
  • Tianyi (Heavenly Unity),
  • Diyi (Earthly Unity).

It is said that wherever Tianfu and the Three Foundation Gods (Junji, Chenji, Minji) arrive, the people enjoy prosperity and longevity, and grains yield abundant harvests. Dayou and Xiaoyou are inauspicious gods: when these evil deities are "calmed," the world enjoys peace; conversely, their unrest leads to chaos across the land and displacement of the people.
The Four Gods (Sishen) are the primordial qi of water, used to divine floods, droughts, wars, plagues, and famines. The Three Primordial Qis (Xuan, Yuan, Shi) each generate three secondary qis, combining to form the Nine Qis (Jiuqi). The Nine Qis existed before the formation of the cosmos, hidden within the "Void." Though they have no form, color, name, order, sound, or voice, they govern the operation of the universe, initiate cosmic evolution, and unlock mystical enlightenment—thus earning great attention from shùshù practitioners. Tianyi (Heavenly Unity) and Diyi (Earthly Unity) are both all-powerful divine entities. Precisely because the Ten Gods of Taiyi possess such comprehensive divine attributes, they are frequently summoned by Taoist priests through incantations.

The phrase "By name, come in haste!" means that the summoned deities must rush to the ritual altar without delay.
