What is the Mandate of Heaven in Taoism?

It refers to the decree, will and operational principles of Heaven.

Based on the different understandings of "Heaven" in ancient philosophy, the "Mandate of Heaven" has various interpretations.

  1. The decree of Heaven as a personal deity. Originating in remote antiquity, it is associated with primitive religious concepts. The thought of the Mandate of Heaven took shape in the early Zhou Dynasty. The people of Zhou believed that the succession of dynasties was ordained by the Mandate of Heaven: "The Mandate of Heaven is not constant; it only aids the virtuous." The Duke of Zhou linked the Mandate of Heaven with "virtue"—Heaven "bestows the mandate upon the virtuous" and "inflicts punishment and calamity upon the guilty", and only kings who uphold virtuous governance may receive Heaven's blessing. The Mandate of Heaven reigns over all, determining the rise and fall of dynasties and the fortune and misfortune of human affairs.

  2. The laws of Heaven as the natural world. Xunzi held that Heaven is the natural world, stating that "Heaven has eternal ways" and "Heaven has fixed principles". These "eternal ways" and "fixed principles" are the Mandate of Heaven, referring to the laws of natural operation. "Mastering the Mandate of Heaven and making use of it" means harnessing the laws of nature to achieve great undertakings, making the Mandate of Heaven serve human affairs in accordance with the movement of Qi and the transformation of Yin and Yang.
