Heshang Gong Chapter 10 – 能為 (Being Capable)
老子河上公章句 · 第10章 · Heshang Gong's Commentary on Laozi
Section 1 — 第1节
Carry Yingpo — Yingpo means soul and spirit. When a person carries the soul and spirit, they may live; one should cherish and nurture them. Excessive joy and anger cause the loss of the soul, while sudden shocks injure the spirit. The soul resides in the liver, and the spirit resides in the lungs. Fine wine and delicious food rot a person's liver and lungs. Therefore, when the soul is calm and one's will follows the Dao without disorder, and the spirit remains at peace, longevity may be attained. Embrace Oneness — can one remain unseparated? This means that when a person embraces Oneness and does not become separated from it, they will endure forever. One is the beginning born of the Dao, the refined qi of supreme harmony. Hence it is said: "One spreads its name throughout the world. Heaven gains One to be clear, Earth gains One to be tranquil, marquises and kings gain One to govern justly. Within, it becomes the mind; outwardly, it becomes conduct. When practiced, it becomes virtue; in summary, it is called One." Cultivate the breath to attain softness — by exclusively guarding refined qi so that it does not become disordered, the physical body can respond and remain gentle and pliant. One can return to the state of an infant — with no inner thoughts or worries and no external affairs to manage, the spirit will not depart. Purify and clear the profound vision — one should cleanse one's heart so that it becomes pure and clean. The mind resides in a dark and profound place, observing all matters of the world; thus it is called "profound vision." One can be without blemish — not indulging in evil; is it pure enough to have no flaws? Love the people and govern the state — those who cultivate their body: if they cherish qi, their bodies remain intact; those who govern a country: if they love the people, the nation will be at peace. One can act without action.
Section 2 — 第2节
Those who cultivate their bodies breathe in refined qi, not allowing it to be heard by the ears; those who govern a country bestow grace and virtue, without letting the people below become aware of it. The celestial gates open and close — the Celestial Gate refers to the North Pole's Ziwu Palace; opening and closing refer to the five junctures of beginning and end. Cultivating one's body: the Celestial Gate refers to the nostrils opening, closing when breathing heavily, meaning respiration. One can act in a yielding manner — when cultivating one's body, one should be like the female, calm and gentle; when governing a country, respond to changes, harmonizing without initiating action. Clear-minded and all-reaching — one's understanding is clear as the sun and moon, reaching in four directions, filling the world beyond its eight extremes. Hence it is said: "Look for it and you will not see; listen for it and you will not hear. Yet its brilliance spreads in all ten directions, shining brightly." One can remain without knowledge — there is no one who can know the Dao that fills the world. Give it life, nurture it — the Dao gives birth to all things and nurtures them. Give life without claiming ownership — the Dao brings forth all things but does not take possession of them. Act without reliance — what the Dao accomplishes is done without expecting reward. Guide without control — the Dao nurtures all things but does not cut them up for use as tools. This is called the profound virtue — the Dao acts through virtue in a dark and profound way that cannot be seen, yet it urges all people to follow the Dao.
