Heshang Gong Chapter 8 - Changing Nature - Chinese ink painting

Section 1 —

The highest good is like water. A person of the highest virtue is like the nature of water. Water benefits all things without contention; water becomes mist and dew in the sky, and springs on earth. It dwells where others dislike — others detest low-lying dampness and filth, but water alone quietly flows and resides there. Therefore, it is close to the Dao; the nature of water is nearly identical to the Dao. Dwelling in good places: the nature of water is to flow downward, from the tops of grass and trees it flows down, resembling a female moving downward and being humble. Mind like deep stillness: deep water is empty and hollow, profound clarity and brightness. In association, be kind: all things depend on water to live. Speech is trustworthy: the reflection of water shows the form, not losing its truth. Uprightness brings good governance: nothing remains uncleaned, it is clear and level. In affairs, be skillful: able to be square or round, bending or straight according to the shape. Action is appropriate to time: in summer it disperses, in winter it solidifies, responding according to the season without missing the right time of Heaven. Only by not contending — if blocked, it stops; if released, it flows, obeying people's will — therefore, there is no blame. Water's nature is like this; therefore, in the world there are none who resent or blame water.
