The Sandong Fufu Kejie Wen 三洞法服科戒文

Sandong Fufu Kejie Wen (Text on the Rules and Precepts of the Three Grottoes' Ritual Robes), written by Zhang Wanfu in the Tang Dynasty, consists of one scroll. It records the system of Taoist costumes, holding that clothing is an outward symbol of one's status. According to different ranks of initiation and reception [of Taoist teachings], there are corresponding rituals and regulations, totaling nine grades. When practicing, Taoists must uphold the talismans, registers, scriptures, and precepts of the Three Grottoes, and wear robes in accordance with these, without any confusion or mixing. Both Taoist headgear and robes have specific connotations.

Taoists should always keep their ritual robes ready, maintain a neat appearance, and prevent non-Taoists from violating the rules regarding ritual robes. The text also establishes forty-six taboos concerning ritual robes; those who violate these rules and precepts will receive corresponding punishments.

This text is a document for studying the Taoist costume system in the Tang Dynasty and is included in the Zhengtong Daozang (Orthodox Taoist Canon) under the category of precepts in the Dongshen (Grotto of the Gods) section.
