The so-called "Six Roots" in Taoism, same as in Buddhism, refer to six sense organs or cognitive abilities. They are as follows:

  • Eye root: the visual organ and its ability;
  • Ear root: the auditory organ and its ability;
  • Nose root: the olfactory organ and its ability;
  • Tongue root: the gustatory organ and its ability;
  • Body root: the tactile organ and its ability;
  • Mind root: the thinking organ and its ability.
