What is the Three Misery Paths 三涂?

Paul Peng
The Three Misery Paths are the path of fire, the path of the sword, and the path of blood.
The path of fire: This is the realm of hell. It is so - called because the sentient beings suffering there are constantly tormented by the heat of cauldrons of boiling water and burning charcoal, or because there are many fires in that place.

The path of the sword: This is the realm of hungry ghosts. It is named so because the sentient beings in this realm are constantly subjected to the suffering of being driven and beaten by swords and staves.
The path of blood: This is the realm of animals. It is called this because among the sentient beings suffering in this realm, the strong overpower the weak, and they devour and prey on each other, drinking blood and eating meat.
