What is Yubu 禹步 in Taoism?
Paul PengShare
Yu Bu (Yu Step) is a kind of step movement commonly used in Taoist rituals for praying to gods. It is said to have been created by Yu the Great of the Xia Dynasty, hence the name "Yu Bu". Since its steps turn and move according to the arrangement of the Big Dipper, as if treading on the stars of the Dipper, it is also called "Bu Gang Ta Dou" (treading on the Gang stars and Dipper constellations).
Taoism worships the sun, moon and stars, with particular emphasis on the Big Dipper. It is believed that praying to gods with this gait can summon gods and spirits, obtain the divine energy of the Big Dipper, expel evil spirits and welcome the true Tao. Taoists also often use it when practicing Qi (vital energy) or entering mountains and forests to gather Qi and drive away evil spirits.
