Chisongzi, also known as "Chisongzi", is said to have been the Rain Master during the time of Shennong (the Yan Emperor). He could immolate himself in fire and move up and down with the wind and rain.

Liexian Zhuan (Biographies of Immortals) states: "Chisongzi was the Rain Master in the age of Shennong. He took water jade and taught Shennong. He could burn himself in fire. He often went to Mount Kunlun and stayed in the stone chamber of the Queen Mother of the West, moving up and down with the wind and rain. The youngest daughter of Emperor Yan pursued him and also attained immortality, leaving with him. During the reign of Gaoxin (the Emperor Ku), he again served as the Rain Master, and the Rain Master we know today originates from him."

In addition to the record in Liexian Zhuan that the youngest daughter of Emperor Yan attained immortality by following Chisongzi in cultivating the Tao, there is also a legend that Huang Chuping became an immortal after encountering Chisongzi. According to Jinhua Chisong Shan Zhi (Records of Chisong Mountain in Jinhua) by Ni Shouyue of the Song Dynasty, Huang Chuping once met Chisongzi in Chisong Mountain, then followed him to cultivate in a stone chamber. He could command stones to turn into sheep, draw water from wells to cure diseases, and appear or disappear at will.

There are many legends about Chisongzi's cultivation and attainment of immortality, which are repeatedly recorded in ancient books. Guo Pu wrote: "Water jade has an ice-like body, reflecting the deep caves. Chisongzi took it, his spiritual body transformed and rode on smoke, inhaling and exhaling the six vital energies, ascending and descending the Nine Heavens." Ge Hong stated: "Fire ganoderma is usually picked in summer, with red leaves and green stems below. Chisongzi took it and often stayed before the Queen Mother of the West, moving up and down with the wind, traveling east and west." Yiwen Leiju (Compilation of Literary Writings) mentions: "Chisongzi liked to eat cypress seeds, and his fallen teeth grew again."

From the above records, Chisongzi is a legendary figure who attained immortality by taking elixirs.
