不出戶知天下;不閥牗見天道。其出彌遠,其知彌少。是以聖人不行而知,不見而名,不為而成。

English Translation — James Legge

Without going outside his door, one understands all that takes place under the sky; without looking out from his window, one sees the Dao of Heaven. The farther that one goes out from himself, the less he knows.

Therefore the sages got their knowledge without travelling; gave their right names to things without seeing them; and accomplished their ends without any purpose of doing so. This inward knowing connects to the stillness that is the standard for all under heaven — and to the contentment that needs no outward seeking.

✦ Key Insight

Chapter 47 is one of the most striking in the Tao Te Ching: without leaving the house, one can know the whole world; without looking out the window, one can see the Dao of Heaven. The further one travels outward, the less one knows. The sage’s knowledge is inward — knowing without moving, naming without seeing, accomplishing without acting. This is not mysticism but the Taoist understanding that the principles governing all things are accessible through stillness and self-knowledge.


Classical Commentaries — 古典注释

王弼注 Wang Bi's Commentary

不出戶,知天下;不窥牗,見天道。事有宗,而物有主,途雖殊而同歸也,慮雖百而其致一也。道有大常,理有大致,執古之道,可以御今,雖處於今,可以知古始,故不出戶,窥牗而可知也。其出彌遠,其知彌少。無在於一而求之於眾也,道視之不可見,聽之不可聞,搞之不可得,如其知之,不須出戶,若其不知,出愈遠愈迷也。是以聖人不行而知,不見而名,得物之致,故雖不行而慮可知也。識物之宗,故雖不見,而是非之理可得而名也。不為而成。明物之性,因之而已。故雖不為而使之成矣。

Wang Bi explains that without going out the door, one can know the world. Without looking out the window, one can see Heaven’s Dao. The further one goes, the less one knows. The sage knows without traveling, understands without seeing, accomplishes without acting.

河上公注 Heshang Gong's Commentary

不出戶知天下,聖人不出戶以知天下者,以己身知人身,以己家知人家,所以見天下也。不窥牗見天道,天道與人道同,天人相通,精氣相貫。人君清淨,天氣自正,人君多欲,天氣煩濁。吉凶利害,皆由於己。其出彌遠,其知彌少。謂去其家觀人家,去其身觀人身,所觀益遠,所見益少也。是以聖人不行而知,聖人不上天,不入淵,能知天下者,以心知之也。不見而名,上好道,下好德;上好武,下好力。聖人原小知大,察內知外。不為而成。上無所為,則下無事,家給人足,萬物自化就也。

Heshang Gong says the sage knows the world by knowing himself — the human body mirrors the world. Heaven and humanity communicate through essence. The further one goes externally, the less one understands. The sage knows through the heart and achieves without acting.
