The Shangqing Sanzun Pulu 上清三尊谱录

The Shangqing Sanzun Pulu 上清三尊谱录

Paul Peng
Shangqing Sanzun Pulu (Genealogy of the Three Revered Ones of Shangqing). The author is unknown.

Judging from its content and textual style, it was presumably compiled by a Shangqing Taoist priest in the late Northern and Southern Dynasties or the early Sui-Tang period.

Consisting of one roll, it is included in the Dongzhen Section, Genealogy and Record Category of the Daozang (Taoist Canon).
Falsely attributed to being written and annotated by Zhenren Xuwu (True Person of Emptiness) under the order of his master Jinming, the text is divided into two parts.

The first half is titled Wushang Jiutian Zhangren Sanzun Pulu (Genealogy of the Three Revered Ones by the Supreme Elder of the Nine Heavens).

The so-called "Three Revered Ones" (Sanzun) refer to:

  1. The First Preceptor, Shangxuan Zhenming Daojun (Dao Lord of the Supreme Mystery and True Illumination);
  2. The Second Preceptor, Wushang Xuanlao (Supreme Mysterious Elder);
  3. The Third Preceptor, Jinming Qizhen (Seven True Ones of Jinming).

All are true deities of the upper heaven. Practitioners of Taoism should know their surnames, given names, courtesy names, appearances, headgear, robes, residences, and the number of their bodyguards. They ought to visualize and contemplate the true forms in their hearts, pray for the descent of the Revered Ones to absolve their sins, and thereby attain the Dao, become true beings, and ascend into the formless realm.

The second half of the scripture is titled Xu Jinming Xuanying Pin (Preface to the Mysterious Responses of Jinming).

It outlines the descent of the Jinming Qizhen (Seven True Ones of Jinming) to the mortal world to propagate the teachings, their reception of the Lingbao Chishu Zhenwen (Genuine Text of the Red Book of Lingbao), their enlightenment of the world with orthodox Taoism, and their exhortation for people to venerate texts such as the Sanzun Pulu Yujing (Jade Scripture of the Genealogy of the Three Revered Ones).
