Di Fu Shi Wang Ba Du Yi — Ten Kings of Hell Ritual

Di Fu Shi Wang Ba Du Yi — Ten Kings of Hell Ritual

Paul Peng

☯️ In Taoist cosmology, death is not an end but a passage through ten celestial courts — each presided over by a divine king who weighs the deeds of the departed. The Di Fu Shi Wang Ba Du Yi (地府十王拔度仪) is a complete liturgical ritual used by Zhengyi Taoist priests, rooted in the Yuanshi Tianzun tradition, to escort souls through purgatory and deliver them to the celestial realm. This sacred text combines incense hymns, confessional verse, and the invocation of the Ten Kings of the Underworld — a tradition traceable to early medieval Taoism (Eastern Han to Tang dynasty). 🏮

1. Origins and Doctrinal Context 🌿

The ritual opens with a cosmological declaration by Yuanshi Tianzun (元始天尊), the Primordial Heavenly Worthy, who dispatches the Miao Xing Zhen Ren (妙行真人) into the nine underworld layers (Jiu You, 九幽) to liberate souls. This framing aligns with the Taishang Dongxuan Lingbao Santu Wuku Jing (Eastern Jin dynasty, c. 4th–5th century CE), a foundational Lingbao scripture that systematized the Ten Kings cosmology in Taoist thought. 🕯️

The ritual belongs to the Zhengyi (正一派) lineage, the orthodox exorcism and liturgy tradition headquartered at Longhu Mountain (龙虎山) since the Eastern Han dynasty. Its ceremonial structure — incense offering, celestial title chanting, verse response — reflects the classical zhai jiao (斋醮) liturgical format codified during the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE).

🔗 To understand the broader framework of Taoist ritual arts, see our guide on the Eight Great Divine Incantations that underpin Taoist ceremonial practice.

2. Opening Invocation — 启圣入科 🪷

The ritual begins with the universal incense offering hymn (普献无边圣), sung three times to invite the Three Pure Ones (三清), the underworld courts (酆都岱岳府), and the water deities of rivers and seas. Each verse ends with the congregational response: 不可思议功德 ("Merit beyond conception"). A closely related soul-liberation liturgy in the Zhengyi tradition is the Ganlu Chant for soul liberation, which employs the same sweet-dew imagery to escort souls through purgatory.

普献无边圣,香烟散大罗。诸天无量圣,日月斗星辰。
玄师经籙祖,天府众高真。愿垂大慈力,超度此亡灵。
和:不可思议功德

The Qi Sheng Ru Ke (启圣入科) section follows with a philosophical prelude: life is transient like a spring dream, a spark from flint, a candle in the wind. Even the virtuous sage transcends death — yet ordinary souls, burdened by karma, must face the ten courts. The presiding Taoist recites this passage on behalf of the deceased, invoking: 大圣三宝天尊.

3. The Three Purities — Incense Offering Sequence ☯️

Three consecutive hymns invite the Three Pure Ones individually:

  • 🌟 Yuanshi Tianzun (元始天尊) — Lord of the Jade Pure Heaven (玉清天), source of creation and cosmic order.
  • 🌟 Lingbao Tianzun / Taishang Dao Jun (太上道君) — Lord of the Upper Pure Heaven (上清天), custodian of Lingbao scriptures.
  • 🌟 Daode Tianzun / Taishang Laojun (太上老君) — Lord of the Grand Pure Heaven (太清天), deified Laozi, author of the Tao Te Ching (道德经, c. 6th century BCE).

Following each hymn, the five ritual incenses are named: 道香、德香、无为香、解脱香、自然微妙返生香 — fragrance of Tao, virtue, non-action, liberation, and natural return to life. For the specific incantation used when lighting ceremonial incense, see our guide to the Taoist Incense-Burning Spell. 🌿

4. The Cosmology of Feng Du and the Northern Hell ☯️

Yuanshi Tianzun reveals the geography of the underworld: beyond the northern sea lies the world of Dong Yin (洞阴), governed by the Wu Ling Xuan Lao Hei Di Tian Jun (五灵玄老黑帝天君). At its center stands Feng Du Mountain (酆都山), rising 50,000 li in circumference, with six internal caverns forming the Yin-Jing Celestial Palace. 🏮

The Ten Kings are supported by a vast bureaucracy: the Five Dipper Spirit Lords (五斗灵君), the Nine Lands Earth Sovereign, the Five Sacred Mountains, and legions of underworld officials who assess karma across ten successive courts. Each court is assigned a time interval — from the first seven days after death up to the third anniversary. The altar arrangement that summons these directional guardians is documented in detail in our article on the Ritual of Worshiping the Four-Directional Gods at the Taiji Thunder Altar.

6. Complete Liturgical Text —

8. Spiritual Significance for the Living 🌿

The Di Fu Shi Wang Ba Du Yi is not merely a mortuary text. Its repeated emphasis on karma, moral cause-and-effect, and the power of Taoist scripture serves as a living instruction: every deed performed in life shapes the soul's journey through the ten courts. The ritual functions simultaneously as a funeral rite, a moral sermon, and an act of collective merit-making for the living. 🏮

✨ Rooted in the Zhengyi tradition of Longhu Mountain, this ritual reminds us that the celestial realm is not distant — it is shaped by each breath, each intention, each act of compassion performed while we are still alive. The Ten Kings do not judge arbitrarily; they weigh what the soul itself has written. ☯️
