Ling Guan Zhao Yi Zhou — The Taoist Incantation for Summoning Spirit Officers

By the edict of Purple Tenuity, the marshals assemble and arrive.
Whoever dares to disobey shall be annihilated by wind and fire.
Wherever divine authority reaches, none may linger.
Whoever dares to resist shall be ground to dust and ash.
Swift, swift — in accordance with the statutes!
The numinous power of heaven and earth —
The Zhengyi numinous light attaches to my body;
The Three-Five Generals follow in my steps;
Acting on heaven's behalf to transform and civilise; assisting the state and rescuing the people;
Proclaiming and spreading the Taoist law; swiftly descend, true numinous presence.
Swift, swift — in accordance with the statutes!
The Ling Guan Zhao Yi Zhou (灵官召役咒, Incantation for Summoning Spirit Officers) is structurally unique among classical Taoist incantations: it is composed of two distinct movements, each sealed with its own closing formula (急急如律令). The first movement is a command incantation of supreme coercive authority; the second is an invocation of divine empowerment and mission. Together, they form a complete ritual act: the practitioner first clears the spiritual field through absolute authority, then receives divine empowerment to carry out the Tao's work in the world.
The first movement opens with the edict of Purple Tenuity (紫微敕令). Purple Tenuity (紫微, Ziwei) is the Purple Tenuity Enclosure — the central celestial palace surrounding the North Celestial Pole, the supreme seat of heavenly authority in classical Chinese cosmology. An edict issued from Purple Tenuity is therefore the highest possible divine command, equivalent to an imperial decree from the celestial emperor himself. The marshals (元帅) summoned by this edict are the supreme commanders of the celestial military, the same class of divine generals invoked in the Ji Shen Zhou to assemble the divine hosts.
The first movement's four lines of threat — 敢有不顺,风火灭形 ("whoever dares to disobey shall be annihilated by wind and fire") and 辄敢抗拒,骨碎微尘 ("whoever dares to resist shall be ground to dust and ash") — are among the most severe in the classical Taoist incantation tradition. The progression is deliberate: first, disobedience is met with annihilation by wind and fire; then, active resistance is met with the complete dissolution of physical form into dust. This escalating threat structure mirrors the authority structure of the Xia Ling Zhou, which similarly reserves its ultimate sanction — dissolution into dust — for those who refuse to yield to divine authority.
The second movement of the Ling Guan Zhao Yi Zhou shifts from coercive authority to divine empowerment. Its central declaration — 正一灵光附我身 ("the Zhengyi numinous light attaches to my body") — is the practitioner's reception of the Zhengyi numinous light (正一灵光), the living spiritual energy of the Zhengyi (正一, Orthodox Unity) tradition — the oldest and most authoritative school of Taoist ritual practice, headquartered at Longhu Mountain. This numinous light does not merely surround the practitioner but attaches to their body, transforming them into a living vessel of Zhengyi authority.
The Three-Five Generals (三五将军) who follow the practitioner are the divine military commanders of the Zhengyi tradition, associated with the Three Heavens and the Five Directions. Their mission — 代天行化,辅国救民 ("acting on heaven's behalf to transform and civilise; assisting the state and rescuing the people") — is the broadest possible statement of the Taoist ritual mission: not merely to perform a specific ritual act but to carry out the Tao's transformative work in the world. This mission is grounded in the same tradition of Taoist divine incantations that has governed ritual practice for over a millennium.
